Wolfgate Wonders

A great week here in Wolfgate, it has been very busy indeed but we have made it to the other side and ready for a restful weekend.

We started the topic of Fractions this week. All I can say is WOW- the children have been simply amazing and have worked incredibly hard to understand and problem solve simplifying fractions to improper fractions and mixed numbers. We have been using and applying our incredible times table knowledge by finding the highest common factor to simplify and also using our division skills to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa.

We have continued to read and understand The Iron Man and have been developing and refining sentences using the Year 6 writing objectives, the children have been working hard to understand how phrases and words have an effect on the reader and how Ted Hughes has used setting descriptions to escalate tension. Over the next couple of weeks we will be refining our sentences and paragraphs building up to an independent writing task.

In topic, the children discovered Skara Brae- which is older than the Pyramids in Egypt and The Great Wall of China! Using Google Maps we went on a virtual school trip to look around, the children were so engaged and then conducted their own research into the findings. They were amazing by the equipment and houses built by the inhabitants some 5000 years ago.

It is Diwali this weekend, which saw Wolfgate embark on their RE topic of Hinduism, this week the children have been researching and learning about the many different gods and what they stand for. For Diwali celebrations, we designed our own Rangoli Patterns.

On Wednesday, we remembered all of those who sacrificed their today for our tomorrow in the conflict of the 1st and 2nd World War. We payed our respects by holding a 2 minute silence, starting with the Last Post from a Wolfgate member and finished with a big round of applause for those who lost their lives fighting for our country.

Act Your Age- the children celebrated Children in Need by taking part in a challenge that reflected their combined ages- as a class, we completed 250 burpees, star jumps and squat jumps.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Wolfgate Team
